Born in Kaikoura in 1940, Brian Baxter started his working life as a display artist in Blenheim, then as a signwriter, before going into full time painting as a professional artist in 1973.
He was originally tutored and encouraged by artists such as Aston Greathead of Kaikoura and John Crump, at this time painting solely in oils.
In 1977 he won first prize in the then prestigious Kelliher awards with an oil painting of Kaikoura, judged by Sir William Dargie.
Watercolours have only been added to his repertoire in later years after attending workshops by artists such as Joseph Zbukvic, Alvaro Castagnet, Ross Paterson, and Greg Allen.
Now considering himself as semi-retired, and with solo exhibitions etc almost a thing of the past, Brian continues to seek improvement in his work by experimenting with both watercolours and oils, without the pressure of always having to "paint to sell".
Portraits are one relatively new pursuit, but as in all fields of painting there is still "so much to learn and less and less time in which to learn it".
