When in my teens I loved art and won a few art prizes but didn’t take up painting seriously until about 15 years ago. Fascinated by the effects of sun and shadow on colour, and the intricacies of structure and detail in nature, I work in watercolour, my favourite medium. The softness and unpredictability of watercolours combine well with botanical detail in semi-realism.
I used to be a keen gardener, but now that I am enjoying painting so much, I do less in the garden and grow flowers in order to paint them in watercolour. My favourite rose in the garden is a semi-single multiflora, “Autumn Delight” and when I go outside and see it in flower, in bright light, I just have to do another rose painting.
I have taken lessons from some of New Zealand’s well-known artists, particularly Ben Ho, and have won prizes and awards for my paintings of flowers, still life and landscapes. One of my prizes was the Sam McGredy trophy for best rose painting at the Mairangi Bay Art Society exhibition.
I have been a member of several art groups for many years, Auckland East Arts, The New Zealand Fellowship of Artists, Palette Artists Inc. and have recently become a member of Watercolour New Zealand.
