Phil Dickson was born in New Zealand and has lived in Wellington all his life. He has always had a pencil in his hand, drawing.
Phil's inspiration comes from a lifetime's love of landscape, townscape, history and the weather. He is largely a self-taught artist.
Through his childhood he developed a fascination with the ever-changing sky and the weather. Drawing led to painting landscapes, coastal subjects and townscapes. A career in cartography enhanced his eye for New Zealand's natural features and the overlaying influences of settlement and interconnecting infrastructure.
Phil has always been a keen observer of the weather, its constant changes creating the effects of light that are the inspiration for his painting. He firmly agrees with the English landscape painter, John Constable, when he once said: "It would be difficult to name a class of landscape in which the sky is not the key note, the standard of scale and the chief organ of sentiment."
Phil's home city of Wellington has provided endless inspiration, being surrounded by its hills and harbour. Many of Phil's paintings are completed in his studio.
He also enjoys painting and sketching on location and sharing such occasions with fellow artists. While travelling or on tramping trips he always carries a sketch pad, pencils and sometimes watercolour as well as a note book, compass and barometer. He likes going back to familiar places and argues that it's not always to see the same scene.
Phil says any subject is unique. The lighting, weather conditions, time of day, and the season present the subject in the moment of time, like a snap shot.
Among the many Wellington subjects Phil paints, are some featuring familiar locations in the city as they once were years ago. He says that history is eternally dynamic, and as you get older, you experience time spans of several decades and that enables you to extrapolate backwards even further and get a good sense of inter-generational and social change. Phil enjoys working from old photographs and other records to enhance the view with the correct vintage of trams, trains and other vehicles of the period.
Phil paints in oils, watercolour and pencil.
He is a member and a regular exhibitor at the New Zealand Academy Of Fine Art. He also exhibits with Watercolour New Zealand where he serves on the committee. He is an active member of Wellington Art Club and has tutored at classes and workshops as well as exhibiting at local art society exhibitions.
Phil's work was featured in Wellington exhibitions with four other noted Wellington artists in 2001, 2003 and 2005 and in a Solo Exhibition at the Academy Of Fine Art in 2007.
As well as selling paintings from exhibitions and galleries, Phil also paints on commission. Some of his paintings have found their way overseas.
